Moving to Tasmania: Facts and information
The Apple Isle is one of Australia's most beautiful and rugged states. Its unspoilt beaches and mountains make Tasmania a prime tourist destination, but also beckon many mainlanders to make it their home. If you've decided to make the move, there are a few logistical and practical issues to consider before undertaking the journey.
Your move to Tasmania
Physically moving to Tassie can seem more daunting than moving to other states because of the water crossing, but there are many alternatives for getting yourself, your household goods and your pets to your new home.
Moving yourself, your family and car is simply a matter of crossing on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry, which is offering some very cheap fares at the moment. You may decide to move simply by hiring a truck, packing your furniture yourself, and driving the lot onto the ferry. There are hire firms which will allow you to pick up a truck in one state and drop it off in another. Bear in mind that you will be charged more for a truck on the ferry than for a car.
Information to help you move to Tasmania
Consider these points before planning your move:
- If you will be looking for work in Tasmania, there is a shortage of skilled workers in fields such as engineering, mechanics, health, chefs and construction
- Skilled migrants and those running a business in Tasmania may be eligible for Resettlement Assistance. This helps with airport meet, orientation and business related assistance. Further information can be found at the Tasmanian government website above
- There are many removal companies which move furniture and goods between mainland Australia and Tasmania. These include Wridgeways, Grace, Allied, Chess and others. Contact several companies for quotes before choosing
- Ensure that all your possessions are securely packed. Small items should be in boxes, securely taped closed and labelled with your surname, a contact number, your new address and number the boxes, eg. 1of 12, 2 of 12, etc
- Pets can be moved by sea or air. Either way they need a secure travelling crate. Generally it is quite inexpensive to send pets by air within Australia, and this is probably the most comfortable and safe option for them. Ask your vet and the airline about special travel requirements for your pets
- You will have three months to transfer your vehicle registration to a Tasmanian one after your arrival
- Moving your household goods by air is certainly the quickest way, but may be costly
Moving to Tasmania means an exciting change of life, and can be accomplished more easily than you may think. Removalists are the easiest way to achieve this.
Moving to Tasmania
Although the beautiful state of Tasmania is separated from the other states by water, moving there is not really any more difficult than most other interstate moves in Australia. Organise your possessions to be moved by a removalist or pack them into a truck and take the ferry, fly your beloved pets over, and your new life in the Apple Isle begins!
