Moving overseas or interstate with pets

Moving can be an exciting time for people, but for our pets it is often a stressful and confusing experience. Animals like dogs and cats are territorial, and moving takes them way out of their comfort zone. Even smaller pets like birds, cavies and rabbits have special needs when moving to ensure their safety, health and comfort.

Pets and moving house

Some things to take into consideration when taking pets on long journeys include:

• Animals don't understand what's going on, and being transported can be very stressful for them. Sensitive creatures like cats and birds can even die from stress, so talk to your vet or animal naturopath about ways to alleviate this
• Animals can dangerously dehydrate on longer journeys, so ensure they are well provisioned. If your dog is travelling with you in the car, frequent rest stops are vital, as is fresh water. Never leave your dog alone in the car on even a mild day. This can kill a dog very quickly
• Animals need special allowances for transportation. Purchase specially designed safe containers for them, that are easily cleaned, as stressed animal may foul themselves frequently

Moving pets interstate or overseas

Long journeys are very difficult for animals, and for some even present a threat to their health. Take these steps to ensure your pet's safety on your move.

• Very long journeys are probably best taken by plane for animals. It is vital that someone is there to meet them at the other end
• Domestic airline flights for animals are usually quite cheap. Contact airlines and check on prices and on specifications for carriers and containers, and exactly where you can meet your pet at the other end
• International flights also take pets, but be aware that your pet will most likely travel in the baggage compartment. Only allow your pet to travel this way with airlines that are reputable and will ensure that your pet is cared for. Get an airline attendant to check on your pet regularly
• Australia has very strict quarantine regulations, so if you are going to return it may be difficult to get your pet back again. Consider leaving the pet with a trusted friend or relative here if your move overseas isn't permanent.
• Overseas pet travel will require paperwork and veterinary inspections. You will need to have vaccinations up to date. Most other parts of the world have rabies, a deadly disease of animals and people which your pet will have to be vaccinated for
• You may need vaccination certificates, a health certificate and an import licence - check with the country you are travelling to. Some overseas countries also have a quarantine period of up to six months
• Your pet needs a passport too! Talk to your vet about how to organise this

Prepare well in advance of travel to ensure that your pet has the required paperwork, is contained safely and will be accepted for travel.

Moving house with pets

No-one wants to leave behind a beloved family member when moving. Taking pets interstate can be a relatively easy matter, but overseas requires a deal of preparation to ensure the animal's safety, comfort and that the pet is allowed to travel. Remember that your pet doesn't understand what's going on, and make allowances for stress, so that you can meet him or her happily at the other end of the journey.
