While moving, your larger items of furniture may seem like the most daunting part of organising your move, take some time to consider how you will protect delicate items during the rigours of moving. Your delicate possessions should, in fact, not only be the first things you consider but also the first items that you pack.
Protecting your delicate items
Consider these hints to ensure that your delicate items survive your next move:
- Pack your delicate and fragile possessions first, and keep them separate from the rest of your belongings
- Wrap them up! Anything that you use as a wrap around delicates should be bound firmly, and should fill in any gaps in items. Don’t just wrap around the item, but pack in gaps like the insides of cups and glasses, and around any protruding parts such as limbs on figurines or spouts on your teapot
- Bubble wrap is an excellent protector of delicates. It can be purchased from post offices relatively cheaply, or online in bulk rolls
- Newspaper is the old standby when protecting delicates for packing. It’s cheap, environmentally friendly, and does an excellent job if individual sheets are used scrunched up
- Another packing trick is to use clothes or bedding to protect delicates. This cuts down on extra packing material, leaves you with less mess at the other end, and can be very effective. Soft clothing like woollen jumpers are ideal
- Don’t let delicate items rattle around loose in boxes. The less movement, the less likely that damage will occur, so after wrapping, pack delicates firmly into boxes (fill the rest of the box with soft items), and ensure that they are packed firmly into the vehicle, so the box itself won’t move
- Consider taking smaller delicates yourself inside your car rather than entrusting them to the truck or trailer
- Ensure that any removalists or helpers know what is delicate – label fragile items clearly and keep them separate
Protecting your delicates during a move is a simple matter of preparing them carefully and labelling them clearly.
Protecting fragile items while moving
To ensure that your fragile and delicate items arrive at your new home safely, wrap them carefully in bubble wrap, newspaper or even clothing, and pack them firmly into boxes to minimise movement. Labelling your delicate items clearly is also important, to ensure that they are treated with care. Take these few precautions on your next move to ensure that your treasured items arrive safely with you.
